Hello! I am david scheirer, a painter and illustrator. 100 owls is an illustration series I am currently in the process of creating. The illustrations are created on paper and drawn with India ink and watercolor. The idea behind this project is to create a large series of a single subject, with each piece unique and interesting. It is in part inspired by the Japanese printmaker Hokusai's "Thirty six views of Mt. Fuji".

Why Owls?
I wanted an animal that would provide a lot of subject matter for this project and owls fit the bill. They are found all over the world, in almost every habitat. In the United States and Canada there are 20 different owls species. Their habitats include woodlands, deserts, suburbs, coasts, tundras, and plains. The habitats and landscapes play an important role in these illustrations so this variety was important to me. I love exploring nature, learning about wildlife, and am an avid birdwatcher. Owls in particular fascinate me and have been a favorite since childhood.
